The NCBI taxonomy database [Wheeler et al. 2007] contains the names of all organisms that are represented in the genetic databases with at least one nucleotide or protein sequence. For a particular group of organisms you can browse the taxonomic structure or retrieve sequence data.

NEWT [Phan et al. 2003] is the taxonomy database maintained by the UniProt group. It integrates taxonomy data compiled in the NCBI database and data specific to the UniProt Knowledgebase.

The Tree of Life Web Project (ToL) is a collaborative effort of biologists from around the world. On more than 3000 World Wide Web pages, the project provides information about the diversity of organisms on Earth, their evolutionary history (phylogeny), and characteristics.
